Email tracking is a privacy-invading feature for advertisers and marketers to follow your email activity using services like Gmail. While most email service providers have tools to save you from email tracking, they are not turned on by default and are not specific to the user. This article intends to let you know how to stop email tracking in Gmail today. Here’s how:
What is Email Tracking?
Email tracking is a lead generation strategy marketers utilize to analyze your behavior and display targeted ads. When an email has obscured tracking pixels embedded in images or links, the sender will know when you open the email. And the number of times you view it, and they even get notifications when you check it.
If that sounds invasive and seems like a breach of your privacy, then you need to disable email tracking on your Gmail account.
Stop Email Tracking Using Gmail
Go to your Gmail account, and navigate to the Settings using the gear icon at the top right corner. A pop-up menu will appear; select “See all settings” to open the settings menu.
In the “General” tab, scroll down a bit and click on the “Images” section. Next, check the option for “Ask before displaying external images.” Now, click “Save changes” at the bottom of the page to apply the changes.
From now on, Gmail will not automatically show the images, protecting you from predatory tracking pixels in marketing emails.
